Science in Second Grade

Integrated Physical, Life, Earth and Space Science Exploration

Through an integrated science lens, students in Second Grade understand topics through a hands-on and inquiry-based approach in which they study concepts including the foundation of forces and interactions, ecosystems and the environmental impacts on organisms, life cycles and traits, weather and climate, and engineering design. This integrated course will require students to ask and answer questions about the topics they are studying, conduct short research projects and take brief notes utilizing evidence from their inquiries.

At the conclusion of the course, students will understand the following units, including but not limited to:

Forces and Interactions

  • Explain and predict the interactions of an object with another object.
  • Understand and conduct investigations with the concept of forces and the changes in motion.
  • Measure the strengths of forces and compare the values of varying forces.

Life Cycles and Traits

  • Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.
  • Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.
  • Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.
  • Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.
  • Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season.

Weather and Climate

  • Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season.
  • Obtain and combine information to describe climates in different regions of the world.
  • Make a claim about the merit of a design solution that reduces the impacts of a weather-related hazard.
