Spanish in Second Grade

In Second Grade, students begin to explore unfamiliar countries and cultures. The curriculum opens up to how people leave in other parts of the world and brings a new dimension to what they learned in Kindergarten and First Grade. Students begin to explore authentic materials, texts and videos, where Spanish language is used in ordinary situations found in unfamiliar places. Still students’ performance is the core of the acquisition of the language and of the assessment of it. There is also the formal introduction of project-based units in which students gain skills over time to later be able to perform in a meaningful and challenging task.

By the end of Second Grade Spanish, students will:

  • Express self in conversations on very familiar topics using a variety of words and phrases.
  • Ask predictable and formulaic questions and respond to those questions with words or simple phrases.
  • Able to function in some personally relevant contexts on topics related to biographical information.
  • Understand and produce highly practiced words and phrases.
  • Understand simple practiced messages when supported by contextual clues.
  • Understand and produce high frequency words and expressions.
  • Maintain communication by imitating, using facial expressions, repeating words, resorting to first language, ask for repetition, and indicate lack of understanding.
  • Use words and phrases to get the main idea from a simple text.
  • Comprehends meaning of oral inputs or written texts by recognizing main words and phrases.
  • Primarily relies on vocabulary to derive meaning from texts.
  • Recognize some cognates and rely on them for understanding of written or oral inputs.
  • Communicate information on familiar topics using some words and phrases that have been memorized.
  • Produces memorized language that is appropriate to the context.
