Raised to the power of Mirman

Service Learning

Ubuntu: I am because we are; humanity towards others.

Service Learning at Mirman is a collaborative form of experiential education for students and the community at large to promote civic engagement and social responsibility. We bridge meaningful community engagement with curriculum and instruction to foster a school community that is both prepared and committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

Anti-Bias Curriculum Framework

Our Service Learning program is designed to seamlessly align with the Learning for Justice Anti-Bias Education Framework across the four domains of Identity, Diversity, Justice, and Action:
  • Identity: Self-awareness
  • Diversity: An understanding of human differences and human connections
  • Justice: An understanding of unfairness, the language to describe unfairness, and an understanding that unfairness is harmful
  • Action: Empowerment and the skills and language to act (with others or alone) against unfairness

Curricular Connections

The comprehensive K-8 program complements grade-level themes and aims to take students on a journey of exploring how to utilize their gifts in service to others beginning with the local perspective and culminating with the global perspective. Below outlines the intended journey point for each grade level:
  • Kindergarten: Students will understand how to utilize their gifts to serve their local school community.
  • First and Second Grades: Students will understand how to utilize their gifts to serve their local community.
  • Third through Fifth Grades: Students will understand how to utilize their gifts to serve their regional community.
  • Sixth Grade: Students will understand how to utilize their gifts to protect their environment.
  • Seventh Grade: Students will understand how to utilize their gifts to encourage civic engagement.
  • Eighth Grade: Students will understand how to utilize their gifts to make a global impact.
